For burn marks on carpet you can use a solution of 5 parts water and one part hydrogen peroxide to help fade the marks on the carpet considerably. Apply the solution liberally and let stand 5-10 minutes for best results then blot up the remaining solution.

Years ago I was given a helpful hint on hiding rug burns. Take a dinner fork, and scrape the burn mark. this helps to remove the black and also lifts the pile surrounding the burn. this along with your hint works even better!
